Smart Communications sought a modern approach to customer engagement, one that could reward users for meaningful interactions rather than just purchases, while reaching them across both mobile and web platforms without the overhead of maintaining separate codebases.
The Approach
The platform was conceived as a single system that could accommodate diverse reward mechanics: task completion, activity streaks, referrals, and partner promotions. React Native with Expo was selected for its ability to deliver a consistent experience across iOS, Android, and web from a single codebase, a critical factor given the wide range of devices in the Philippine market.
Performance received particular attention during the architecture phase. Reward platforms live or die by their responsiveness; users checking points or redeeming offers expect immediate feedback. The technical foundation needed to support real-time updates even under high concurrent load.
The Execution
The application was built on React Native and Expo, with careful optimization ensuring smooth performance across all platforms. The reward redemption flow was designed for minimal friction, from point balance check to confirmation, each step was streamlined to reduce drop-off.
The quest and task system was architected for flexibility, allowing the business team to configure new engagement mechanics without requiring app updates. This separation between business logic and application code enabled rapid iteration on reward strategies based on user behavior data.
The Outcome
GIG Rewards grew to over 70,000 active users, facilitating millions of pesos worth of deals and redemptions. The cross-platform approach proved effective: users move fluidly between mobile and web based on context, maintaining consistent engagement across touchpoints. The platform continues to serve as Smart Communications’ primary digital engagement channel with its customer base.
